MFT Colour challenge - Take Two

Yes you read that right... I went ahead with the first idea that came into my head and made another card for the My Favorite Things colour challenge #44

For this card I used exactly the same Distress Ink colours - Wilted Violet, Carved Pumpkin, Mowed Lawn and Twisted Citron.  I also decided to use my Peerless watercolours.

Remember when I said that my last card was COMPLETELY different from what I had in my head???  Well here's the major difference... instead of doing soft watercolours and flowers I went with Dyan Reaveley's Monster Mash stamp set!

I've had this stamp set for a couple of years now... and while it's not completely a NBUS stamp set it 'kinda is'.  I HAVE stamped a few of the images before... including the ones that end up on my card today... BUT I've always chucked them in the bin because they just wouldn't turn out the way I wanted them to!  So today I've broken the 'throw it in the bin' cycle because, in spite of the fact that I made a few mistakes along the way,  I LOVE how my card turned out!

I decided I wanted my 'crazy scientist' to hold onto the beaker and I thought I had it all worked out with masking and stamping... BUT the first attempt (on the right) had the beaker 'floating' in thin air!  My second attempt worked perfectly though:

I also decided to move my images down just a bit because I realised that the sentiment stamp I wanted to use wouldn't fit in... sometimes I'm convinced we're meant to make mistakes for a reason!

Next up I 'smooshed' my chosen Distress Inks onto my plastic mat and spritzed them with water so that I could do my background colouring:

I literally realised JUST in time that I hadn't masked my images!!!  After all the stamping, heat embossing, masking and having to start over again I came within SECONDS of messing the whole thing up!

So, BIG breath... calm down... patiently paint over all of the images with liquid masking fluid.

After letting the masking fluid dry I went ahead and used my previously prepared mat of inks, kind of like those cooking shows... "Here's one I prepared earlier".

So I 'smooshed' the inks... heat gunned them dry... 'smooshed' some more... did a bit more heat gunning and then I was pretty darn happy with the results.  When the ink just sits on top of the masking fluid it's pretty easy to just wipe it away gently with a paper towel.

The next job was to ink around the edges of the card using the Distress Inks and my ink blending tool.  I always feel like it gives the final piece a nicely finished result.

Then comes the fun bit... gently peeling off the rubbery masking fluid to reveal the images underneath.  I decided to get an 'in progress' photo this time to give you an idea of what it looks like as you peel away.

After I peeled off the masking fluid I gave the card front a quick blast with the heat gun to make sure everything was super dry and then I stamped and embossed my sentiment using Queen's Gold embossing powder.  The sentiment comes from my Dina Wakley mixed media stamp set and this one says: Magic is something you make.

If you have a good look at the photo (below) you might notice that a little bit of my 'smooshing' got through the masking fluid.  There's a little bit of orange on his left eye and a bit more on his coat by the buttons.  One of the fabulous things about using Distress Inks for the background is that little ink splotches like this are actually completely fixable!

All you do is use your water brush with JUST water and go over the splotches and blot with a paper towel.  Do it as many times as necessary (usually three or four does the trick) and the ink pretty much disappears like magic!  Can you see the difference?

Before I started colouring the images I thought my little scientist needed a more 'magical' lab coat so I added some polka dots using my Zig pen... super easy... super random... and of course totally waterproof!  Pretty funky don't you think??

Next, I got out my Peerless watercolours and got busy adding some colour.  Since it was a colour challenge I pretty much stayed with the purple, orange and green mix of the challenge.

Once I had finished I matted my card using the same purple cardstock as I used for my first card and then put it straight onto my card base... super, super cute!

So this was the colour challenge provided by My Favorite Things - Challenge #44

So... just for fun... I thought I'd show you the cards I made for this challenge... super different but both meeting the challenge!  Have you got a favourite?

Thanks for coming back for another visit xx
